Qualcomm launched their new chipset during the Snapdragon Tech Summit, on 30th November. Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is their latest flagship chipset and it’s the first one to adopt the new naming. According to Qualcomm, this new naming represents a new generation of chips that focus on AI processing and increased 5G speeds.
There are new and interesting things about the new chipset, so let us take a look:
Basic Features
This chipset has several exciting additions. And as it is with everything new, it’s better than it’s predecessor, Snapdragon 888.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is 4nm build, making it more efficient. It also has new 3GHz ARM Cortex-X2 performance core, which has 40% better performance than Snapdragon 888.
The chip supports 16GB of RAM, and paired with X65 modem. This enables 10Gbps 5G speeds. There’s Wi-Fi 6, 6E support for faster Wi-Fi connection.
For gamers, Snapdragon Elite Gaming comes with a 30% boost in graphics rendering. Plus, the latest Adreno GPU‘s power efficiency is increased.
AI Capabilities
Qualcomm is proud of their focus on AI capabilities and performance in this new chipset.
There’s 7th Gen Qualcomm AI engine. This features AI performance that is four times faster than before. The features include on-device capabilities enhanced to better group and prioritize notifications on Android phones.
There’s vocal analysis in collaboration with Sonde Health.
The AI engine will take photography to a different level, Qualcomm claims. This is thanks to Leica’s Leitz Look mode, and introduction of Snapdragon Sight.
Snapdragon Sight brings the best of Qualcomm’s imaging under one name.
Picture and video capture quality is increased thanks to Qualcomm’s first 18-bit ISP. This allows vivid images and 8K HDR videos capture. There’s simultaneous capture from up to 3 sensors.
New Spectra ISP allows capture up to 200MP images.
Qualcomm also highlights “mega night mode”, which captures and stitches 30 images together for the best night shots.
Other Information
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 will be the first mobile platform to support Android Ready SE. This paves the way for standardized digital car keys, mobile drivers’ licenses and more, while retaining high level of security. Considering this, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is a great competition to Google’s Pixel 6 and the Tensor chip.
The new chipset is set to be Android OEMs. Honor, Motorola, Nubia, OnePlus, OPPO, RealMe, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi, Redmi, and more might have Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Qualcomm says the first commercial device might come before the end of year.
