Honor 9X : Should you be afraid?

The X series from Honor is the most promising budget smartphone series. Honor 9X could have been better in many areas. But before criticizing this beautiful device, let us see what its got right. Design

Honor 9X is crafted with precision. Honor’s trademark reflective geometric tiles produces the X flash in right light. The embedded X trademark represents the legacy of X series. The back is built with plastic which lowers the standard. The choice for plastic back is right and wrong both at the same time. It is more durable but does take away the premium feel from the device. A fingerprint sensor exists that’s fast enough to make you happy. USB type-c and the lovely headphone jack. The front is all display, no notch just a popup camera when you need it. The popup includes fall and pressure detection which increases its reliability.

2018 from Inside

We all have seen the Honor 8x it is a great device. But it is not so good to be relaunched with a flashy design. Honor 9x is literally similar to the 8X from inside. The chipset is Kirin 710F which is quite similar to 710 of 8X. The display is fine 6.59 inch Full HD+ enough for movies and gaming. The chipset choice is confusing with honor.

Honor 9x launched in China is powered by Kirin 810 which is much more powerful compared to 710F. The choice of chipset might be a result of US dispute. Maybe Honor has to keep old hardware to keep Google services, that’s just a thought. Honor 9X comes with EMUI 9.1 and 4000mAH battery. You can charge your device within 128 min approx. No fast charging.

The Biggest flaw

48MP triple camera system is literally worse than expected. Honor is not using the Sony IMX586 sensor instead it is sourcing its sensors from different suppliers. The quality will depend more on which sensor you get. Even the Post processing isn’t great. The wide angle camera is a disappointment. The Camera is better than the average camera in this price segment but is not what Honor is known for. Competition offers much better cameras. Daylight is quite good, Night mode adds improvement in low light.

Verdict

Honor 9X is the most stunning device of Honor's X series. The device has a lot to offer but the hardware isn't updated. The Camera on the other hand isn't a game changer. Recommending a 9X over the competition will be a mistake. You can get devices like Redmi note 8 Pro or vivo Z1 Pro or the Nokia 7.2 at this price.
